into image) . Doctor Thomas John Barnardo was a
Victorian social entrepreneur best known for rescuing homeless & afflicted
children from the streets. He died in the year previous to this mailing, so
the postcard may be part of a fund-raising campaign launched immediately
thereafter to fill the void caused by the loss of his considerable
fund-raising skills & connections. The first of many homes he established

a Wright flyer, unsigned art copyrighted 1909 by Humphreys' Homeopathic
Medicine Company on an advertising postcard for W. H. Teague of Lewiston
Maine, preaddressed to manufacturer in New York City & requesting a free
sample, blanks on back not filled in unevenly toned back. Message area lists
very detailed claims for the oil's applicability Surely one of the earliest
suggestions that aircraft could carry advertising banners, but the placement
of the banner would have made more sense trailing behind the fast-moving
aircraft, rather than hanging straight below it as if there were no wind.
Another variant of this card replaces the aeroplane with a kite having such

pipe there, unused color lithochrome postcard published by Claude Y Ross
(his no. C13223), made in Germany circa 1908, light toning both sides, minor
corner wear & rounding. This old spring gave rise to Zanesville's early name
of Springfield Township; at that time the road was called Lovers' Lane. In
our experience, most views of this location are scenic, rather than showing
the spring in actual use. Providing an additional distinction from most
children postcards, these youngsters are performing a chore suitable for
