Diving Meet 1915 in Hawaii
These 3 real photo postcards are from the same series, documenting a diving meet in
Hawaii. They are numbered 1, 7, and 10. We have not seen the others in all our years of
dealing. Unmailed & ready for study by a serious student of the sport.

Dorothy Becker on the springboard with many spectators in the background. February 20,
1915. Dorothy was from Santa Cruz County California, and about 15 years old at the time.

Dorothy Becker coming out of the water as Olympian & Hawaiian Duke Kananamakusu
watches. The Duke was very popular--and this is the likely explanation for why so many
people (seen in the top postcard) turned out for the meet.

Bowes piked in mid-air, from the high platform, back-lit against a bright sky, Well
focused and well composed--especially considering the photo equipment of that time.
Above 3 postcards sold. Still available for scholarly study & research as full-size scans in .jpg or .tif format.

HAWAII CONSOLIDATED RAILWAY.
Two unused SSSS real photo postcards showing
front & side views of a gasoline-powered White Motor Company railbus (number
3 of 3) received by the Hawaii Consolidated Railway (its logo conspicuously
on the side) for passenger traffic (tourist & local commuter) near its
company shops in Waiakea. The gentleman on the left is Richard W. Filler,
HCR Manager. On the right is Ezra Amos May, HCR brake expert who later
became yardmaster. By the newness of the vehicle, and by the real photo
type, we can date the view to circa 1924-1925. Under magnification we can
see that the motorman / ticket-taker's entry from the left side was more
narrow than the entry for passengers on the right. Obviously each postcard
is one-of-a-kind: no captioning, no photographer attribution & no publisher
attribution. One of the 8 corners has trivial wear; back paper starting to
brown evenly with age. Such vehicles
were meant to provide economical passenger service at a times & places where
passenger traffic was declining. We have not seen their likes elsewhere.
Railbus real photos are rare for any railroad, anytime (these are early) &
anywhere. These belong together in a museum.
$165.00 either or $320.00 gets
them both. h(h)r(h)gg
