finishing at the corner, and 'Entw. / Baumst. Bochner' on the sidewalk &
completed curb nearby. [The latter translates from German as 'Entwickler /
Baumeister Bochner' or 'Developer / Master Builder Bochner'.] The Bochners
were one of the first documented Jews in Bukovina, and Czernowitz is the
major city of Bukovina. Buchbinder is the name of a Jewish banker in
Czernowitz at that time. And thus this postcard depicts the Jewish bank
building which was completed on the Ringstrasse there in 1899. Black & white

Short, writing on front, trivial corner wear. Prominent near the left is the entire front
of the Jesse Spira Clothing store, next to a grocery. An interview published by the
Columbus Jewish Historical Society puts the Spira's as the only Jewish family in
Centerburg at the time, with the nature of their business uncertain. This postcard
