Flower-bedecked
parade float of a three-masted ship without signage placed before a massive
pipe organ; uncaptioned real photo postcard mailed at Millstone NJ (now a
discontinued Post Office in Somerset County) on APR 16 AM 1906 (the day
after Easter) to Mrs. Mattie Elliot in Morristown New Jersey; Newark NJ
transit cancel 12:30PM that day; sender's first name written neatly top
front. Parade floats for the Atlantic City Easter Parade (a huge regional
event at the time) were often decorated with flowers, and we have seen such
a 1906 parade float albeit different that participated in that event. The
church, hall, or auditorium in which this organ was situated was undoubtedly
known to both sender & recipient; but images of New Jersey organs typically
emphasize the keyboard rather than the pipes, leaving us in the dark. The
true location has to be near the cities mentioned here: participate in the
parade, display by the organ, take then develop a photo, mail the next
morning ... is all on a tight timeline. $15.00 mpn(a)

Sepia-tone
real-photo postcard showing 2 college-age men with their musical
instruments, mailed Feb 4 1914 at Lexington Nebraska. Exceptionally
interesting message: "Am going uptown to-night to hear a speech against the
Catholics. Are having quite a time here over religion now." According to the
Clipper-Citizen weekly of Feb 6 1914, the speaker was William Lloyd Clark.
He spoke to a standing-room-only crowd on February 2 & 3 (the card was
mailed next day) at Smith's opera house. His pre-announced topic was an
innocuous sounding 'Public Schools, Free Speech and Press'. But the local
Catholics knew of the career anti-Catholic pamphleteer & speaker by
reputation & promptly circulated a petition for signatures asking their city
council to suppress the meeting. Some signed it, some did not & were
threatened with a boycott of their businesses. The meeting was peaceful, and
so too was the aftermath. William Lloyd Clark continued travelling
extensively well into the mid-1920's. He later identified himself with the
Independent Klan of America, which some label a splinter group of the Ku
Klux Klan (KKK). In any event, when the KKK began its resurgence -- some say
1914, some 1915 -- they found his many anti-Catholic pamphlets useful &
circulated them widely at their meetings. Clark also published ads in the
KKK Dawn asking for subscriptions. An interesting piece of social history.
