This would be the July shipment of prisoners to the penal colony in French Guyana, 'the most infamous prison in history' according to Crime Magazine. The subject of many different postcards, but this one is hard to find. "ASSOUAN / Carl Neufeld, / le prisonnier du Mahdi" showing him with a monkey on a balcony in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, circa 1910 - 1912; unused postcard numbered 64 on its divided back, tiny left bottom corner crease. During his imprisonment & exploitation by the Sudanese religious leader Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd Allah (the Mahdi or 'guided one'), he wore about 60 pounds of chains at all times. So this image is obviously after he had been freed, when he was staying at Aswan with his sister during the time we quote here. Someday we have no doubt his adventures (and misadventures!) will make an interesting movie.
